Managed Servers

Pros:
  • Great for customers without the technical expertise to manage a server.
  • Good for customers that may have the expertise, but want to focus on other things.

Cons:

  • Lack of control
  • Can be expensive

Managed servers come in many different shapes and sizes. With a managed server the hosting company provides a certain level of server administration for you, and the amount that they provide varies greatly.

They should atleast provide the following.

  • Complete server setup and configuration
  • Operateing system, software, and security updates
  • Software installation, configuration, and optimization

If you are just looking for the typical setup, hosting and email for a few sites, then there are many managed server packages that will provide you with almost complete server administration. This will allow you to focus on using the server and not babysitting it. However, if you are trying to do something out of the ordinary, like using custom software, then you probably don't want someone else managing your server and possibly disrupting your custom software. Also, the applications you want to use may be outside the scope of the service agreement. Find out what is covered for free and what will be an additional charge before signing up.
